Inspired Speakers Series: A Framework for Understanding Poverty

– Idress Gooden

Bridge Road Bistro, 915 Bridge Rd, Charleston, WV, 12:00 pm

People in poverty face challenges virtually unknown to those in middle class or wealth. Being poor is more than a lack of money, it is a lack of resources.  Thus, the reality of being poor brings out a survival mentality, and turns attention away from opportunities taken for granted by everyone else.

Given the changes occurring in the health sector, it is invaluable that policy makers and health care leaders understand the world of those who live in poverty and how different their world is. Such understanding will lead to more effective public policy, such as Medicaid reform, to ensure access to health services and improve the health of all who live, work and go to school in our communities.

Based upon Dr. Ruby K. Payne’s book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, Idress Gooden will discuss how individuals from poverty, middle and upper economic classes think and act differently based upon the social cues or “hidden rules” that govern how people think and interact in society.  These rules are the unspoken cues and habits of a group which impact achievement in schools and success in the workplace.
